Protecting the Environment
Attorney General Kroger’s goal is to make Oregon the nation’s leader on environmental protection. Though Oregon is an innovator of eco-friendly programs, including the nation’s first bottle bill and a comprehensive land use planning system, we still face serious environmental challenges. Right now every major river in Oregon fails federal clean water standards. Multnomah County ranks among the top 1% nationwide for cancer-related threats due to air pollution. These dangers threaten public health as well as our natural environment.
In recent months, the Department of Justice preserved our state’s interest in several landmark cases. Understanding that decisions made now will continue to effect Oregonians for generations to come, the Oregon Department of Justice:
- Investigates and prosecutes environmental crimes;
- Ensures that hazardous and nuclear waste is properly contained and cleaned up;
- Protects roadless wilderness areas; and
- Fights to preserve endangered species and vital waterways.
