About Ellen F. Rosenblum
Attorney General Hardy Myers today released his annual report profiling nonprofit organizations entitled "Charitable Giving; It Makes a Difference." This year's report includes organizations utilizing professional fundraisers that received low ratings from national charity watchdogs.
"Oregonians are advised to use all available resources to scrutinize charitable solicitations made by professional fundraisers," Myers said. "This report will help donors avoid charities that don't make the most of their contributions."
The report, which is available on the Department of Justice (DOJ) website, includes information about charities' missions, expenditures, fundraising practices and ratings by the Better Business Bureau, the American Institute of Philanthropy, and Charity Navigator. Information on professional fundraisers, including the percentage of funds raised going directly to charity, is also included.
The report, which represents only a small sample of the more than 14,000 charities registered with the Charitable Activities Section of DOJ, is provided as a tool to inform donors how to obtain information needed to make wise giving decisions, especially in response to solicitations, by professional telemarketers. The Attorney General encourages all Oregonians to give generously, but wisely, this holiday season.
