September 2, 2008

Attorney General Hardy Myers Appoints New Head Of Department Of Justice General Counsel Division

Attorney General Hardy Myers today announced the appointment of Philip Schradle to be Chief Counsel, or division administrator, of the Oregon Department of Justice General Counsel Division effective January 1, 2009. Schradle will succeed Don Arnold, who previously announced his resignation from the Chief Counsel position effective the end of 2008.

"Phil has served as a valuable member of the Department of Justice for over 25 years with demonstrated excellence as a lawyer and in administrative management," said Myers. "I am confident he will be a worthy successor to Don Arnold, one of the most important members of the Department in its entire history, in assuming one of the Department's most important positions."

A graduate of Stanford University and the University of Michigan Law School, Schradle joined the Department of Justice in its Appellate Division in 1983 after a period in private practice. After serving in both the Appellate and General Counsel Divisions, Schradle was appointed by Myers as a Special Counsel to the Attorney General in 2001. As Special Counsel, Schradle was responsible for a wide range of assignments including contributing to major state litigation on elections law, free speech and climate change policy. He also coordinated the Department's amicus curiae ("friend of the court") brief review process and chaired the Attorney General's Underage Drinking Task Force.

Schradle will be joining the General Counsel Division as an Acting Assistant Chief Counsel prior to next January's transition.
