Prosecutor is accused of using his office to try to obtain sex from a woman who owed child support

Attorney General John Kroger today announced the indictment of a Lincoln County prosecutor on charges that he attempted to use his position to obtain sexual favors.

"Government officials must be held to the highest standards," said Attorney General Kroger. "Prosecutors wield great power and must not abuse it."

Rand Eugene Overton (58), a Lincoln County Deputy District Attorney, was indicted Thursday on four counts of official Misconduct in the First Degree and two counts of Attempted Coercion.

A criminal indictment is merely an allegation. Every criminal defendant is considered innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Assistant Attorney General Dan Wendel is prosecuting the case for the Oregon Department of Justice.

Attorney General John Kroger leads the Oregon Department of Justice. The Department's mission is to fight crime and fraud, protect the environment, improve child welfare, promote a positive business climate, and defend the rights of all Oregonians.
