May 4, 2011

Jairo Andres Vicente was sentenced to life in prison for killing 54-year old Jerry Cranmer during the robbery of his local motel

Hood River District Attorney John Sewell and Attorney General John Kroger today announced the conviction and sentencing of a White Salmon, Washington, man for fatally shooting Hood River-area motel owner Jerry Cranmer during a robbery in 2009.

"The Department of Justice was proud to assist District Attorney Sewell in this important case," said Attorney General Kroger.

Jairo Andres Vicente (DOB: 02/01/87) pleaded guilty in Hood River Circuit Court to one count of Aggravated Murder and one count of Robbery in the First Degree with a Firearm. Vicente was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum sentence of more than 37 years.

A core mission for the Department of Justice is to assist Oregon district attorneys in the investigation and prosecution of murders. Currently, DOJ is working on 13 cases involving murder or homicide in multiple counties across the state.

On September 10, 2009 Vicente, along with accomplices Delores Claudia Escoto and Marlene Zarate, robbed the Vagabond Lodge in Hood River. Vicente was armed and shot Cranmer, the 54-year old proprietor of the motel when he resisted. Cranmer's body was discovered by his 16-year-old son in the office of the Vagabond Lodge. More than $300 was missing from the cash register.

Escoto and Zarate each pleaded guilty in Hood River Circuit Court to one count of Robbery in the First Degree and were each sentenced to 90 months in prison. Both women cooperated in the prosecution of Vicente.

Numerous law enforcement agencies worked on the investigation into Cranmer's death, including the Hood River County Sheriff's Office, Hood River Police and Oregon State Police.

Hood River District Attorney Sewell prosecuted the case along with Senior Assistant Attorney General Scott Jackson from the Oregon Department of Justice.

Attorney General John Kroger leads the Oregon Department of Justice. The Department's mission is to fight crime and fraud, protect the environment, improve child welfare, promote a positive business climate, and defend the rights of all Oregonians.
