Elder Abuse

Forms of elder abuse touch on almost every type of victimization possible. By definition it is any willful mistreatment that results in harm or loss to an older person such as:

  • Physical injury to an older person that is not accidental

  • Sexual abuse or exploitation

  • Domestic violence

  • Neglect thatleads to harm

  • Abandonment

  • Mental or emotional anguish inflicted by threat, humiliation, or other conduct

  • Stealing or taking advantage of a older person’s finances, property or resources through deceptive means

If you are or someone you know is elderly or disabled and being mistreated, help is available. If you
suspect an abusive situation please call your local DHS or Area Agency on Aging Office. You may also report abuse at 1-800-232-3020. If it is an emergency please dial 9-1-1. For more information please see the DHS publication Adult Abuse Reporting.
