JACKSON COUNTY ACUPUNCTURIST BARRED FROM PRACTICING HEALTH CARE IN OREGON

November 18, 2010

A Department of Justice investigation revealed Paul Shandor Weiss misrepresented his licensing status in violation of state law

Attorney General John Kroger today announced an agreement with Paul Shandor Weiss, who operated the Ashland-based business, Arura Clinic of Natural Medicine, that settles allegations that he misrepresented his licensing status and ability to practice naturopathic medicine in Oregon.

"Oregonians must be able to rely on the credibility of health care providers," said Attorney General Kroger. "We will not permit unlicensed practitioners to put our personal safety at risk by misrepresenting their qualifications."

This case was referred to the Oregon Department of Justice by the state Board of Naturopathic Medicine, which is responsible for licensing and regulating naturopathic physicians in Oregon. Weiss was formerly licensed as a naturopath, but surrendered his license in early 2010 after the Board issued a notice of proposed discipline that identified concerns about Weiss' treatment of multiple patients. Weiss retained his license to practice acupuncture.

An investigation by Department of Justice revealed that Weiss used language on his website and intake forms that misrepresented his licensing status and was providing services outside the scope of a licensed acupuncturist.

The agreement filed in Jackson County Circuit Court requires Weiss to pay $50,000 to the Department of Justice and surrender his acupuncture license. He must also permanently cease providing any type of health care service in the State of Oregon.

"I want to thank the Board of Naturopathic Medicine for their assistance on this case," said Attorney General Kroger.

Assistant Attorney General Merrill A. Maiano handled the case for the Oregon Department of Justice. Senior Assistant Attorneys General Johanna Riemenschneider and Warren Foote assisted with the surrendering of the acupuncture and naturopathic medicine licenses.

Attorney General John Kroger leads the Oregon Department of Justice. The Department's mission is to fight crime and fraud, protect the environment, improve child welfare, promote a positive business climate, and defend the rights of all Oregonians.
