Studies have estimated that 1 in 10 older adults have experienced some sort of abuse in the prior year. Experts fear that incidences of elder abuse, particularly financial exploitation, have only increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, social isolation and a shift to more virtual activities, have led to an increase in fraud targeting older adults, including romance, government imposter, and online shopping scams. This 90-minute panel will discuss various types of elder abuse, financial fraud and exploitation affecting older, vulnerable adults. Financial professionals, caregivers and advocates will learn how to identify red flags of elder fraud, locate reporting and prevention resources, and apply trauma-informed strategies when working with and assisting older victims.
