On Aug. 18, the Oregon Department of Justice opened an investigation into alleged criminal conduct by Umatilla County District Attorney Dean Gushwa. Today, District Attorney Gushwa informed Governor Kulongoski and the Department of Justice that he would temporarily step aside. In order to insure the proper enforcement of Oregon’s criminal laws, Governor Kulongoski has authorized the Department of Justice to temporarily perform the duties of the District Attorney until the investigation is concluded. Neither the Governor’s Office nor the Department of Justice will have any comment on the scope or the progess of the investigation.
