Attorney General Hardy Myers today announced that the Oregon Department of Justice (DOJ) has directed its hotline – 1-877-877-9392 - to accept tips about cockfighting and dog fighting in Oregon. Anyone with information about involvement in these illegal activities is encouraged to contact DOJ and, if the information leads to the arrest and conviction of a guilty individual, The Humane Society of the United States will provide a $5,000 award.

"In Oregon, we've strengthened the laws, enhanced the penalties and raised awareness about the illegality and cruelty of animal fighting," stated Myers. "Now, we need information and any tips the public can provide will help law enforcement to do its job in combating this horrible and inhumane crime."

Myers announced the tip hotline and reward offer earlier today at a joint news conference held with The Humane Society of the United States and Senate President Peter Courtney (D-Salem), who has sponsored recent legislation to increase the crimes and penalties for dog fighting.

In Oregon, participation in animal fights is a serious crime. Participating directly or as a spectator and possession of fighting dogs and paraphernalia are all crimes classified as Class C Felonies. The same is true for cockfighting with the exception of spectator participation, which continues to be classified only as a misdemeanor. All animal fighting crimes are punishable by a maximum of five years in prison and/or a penalty up to $125,000.

Information about animal fighting can be provided to the Department's hotline by calling 1-877-877-9392 (toll-free in Oregon), 503-378-4320 (Salem area only) or 503-229-5576 (Portland area only) or by accessing a tip form online at www.doj.state.or.us. Tip line hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
