The National Marine Fisheries Service, represented by the U.S. Department of Justice, joins Oregon, Washington, Columbia Riverkeeper and other environmental groups in appealing the approval by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission of the liquefied natural gas project on the lower Columbia River.

Attorney General John Kroger announced today that the federal government has joined Oregon in appealing the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s approval of the Bradwood Landing LNG project in Clatsop County.

“I am delighted that U.S. Attorney General Holder agrees that FERC’s order is unlawful,” said Attorney General Kroger.

In January, Oregon appealed FERC’s authorization of the Bradwood project. FERC’s conditional license allows construction to begin without regard to the harmful impact on Oregon’s water quality and coastal resources, including protected species. Oregon argues that federal law requires consideration of those impacts.

The State of Washington and a coalition of environmental groups led by Columbia Riverkeeper have joined Oregon’s suit.
