Unlawful Demand for Commercial Driver License Data (Illinois v. U.S. Department of Transportation, E.D. Va.)

Lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and the American Association of Motor Vehicle Association, to block efforts to share personal data for 17 million commercial driver license holders. In a related action, the States also moved to quash a Department of Homeland Security subpoena for the same data.

On 8/13/26, the plaintiff states filed their complaint and motion for temporary restraining order, as well as a motion to quash the DHS subpoena. Later that same day, the district court administratively stayed the federal government’s data demand and scheduled a hearing on the TRO motion for 8/20/26.
